Owning a parrot is a very fun and exciting journey in life. It is important that we know how to look out for things that can make our parrot sick.
Can parrots get sick from humans? According to research, the most common diseases that humans have, including the flu and the common cold, cannot be passed from a human to a parrot. If a human has a bacterial infection or if the human has been a carrier to a bacterial infection, it can cause your bird to catch this infection.
Birds can become sick with an infection, even if the human family does not have any sickness or infection.

Can Parrots Catch Colds from Humans?

Parrots cannot catch a common cold that a human would have, but your pet parrot can catch things such as bacterial infections, eye infections, and some other viruses.
Can Parrots Transmit Disease to Humans?

One disease that can be passed from your pet parrot to you and other humans living in the home is called Psittacosis. This is an infectious disease that is spread from birds to humans.
Birds in the parrot family sometimes have a bacterium called Chlamydia psittaci, and this is the bacteria that causes the disease.
Birds in the parrot family are the birds that are most likely to spread this disease from themselves to their owner. This disease can be found in places such as pet stores, homes of the bird owners, zoos, and veterinarians.
The disease has also been found on farms and in slaughterhouses where the workers slaughter and process birds such as turkeys and ducks.
Most people that catch this disease get it from breathing in the dust from dried bird droppings that are found in birdcages. The waste that birds leave behind can have this disease for weeks and stay infected for at least that long or longer.
There are many symptoms of Psittacosis in humans, including:
- Chills
- Muscle aches
- Fever
- Cough
- Pneumonia
- Flu-Like Illness
The birds might experience symptoms such as:
- Eye or nose discharge
- Ruffled Feathers
- Green or Yellow Droppings
- Diarrhea
Sometimes, if the disease is not discovered and treated in the adult or the bird, both cases can lead to death.
Antibiotics such as doxycycline and Tetracycline are used to treat people that have this disease.
Is Parrot Poop Toxic to Humans?

Parrot droppings can cause diseases and parasites. These diseases can spread to humans who change the cages of their birds.
This is one of the health concerns of owning any type of bird.
Why Is My Parrot Sick?

If your parrot is regurgitating its food, this is normal behavior and is often done as a bonding situation for many pet parrots. This process happens from the time that the parrot is born and feeds from its mother.
If your parrot is vomiting, though, this is not a normal thing and can mean that your bird is very sick. Even though regurgitating and vomiting can look the same, if your bird is flicking small pieces of food that have not been digested around the cage, chances are your bird is vomiting.
If you suspect that your bird is vomiting, this can be a very serious sign of a health issue. You should contact your vet immediately, and when you take your bird to the vet, make sure that you take the cage with you so that the vet can see if there are any clues as to why the parrot is vomiting.
Some of the most common reasons why your parrot might be vomiting are:
- Toxic poisoning
- Lower GI disease
- Parasites
- Fungal disease
- Viral disease
- Bacterial Disease
- Avian Pox
- Lesions in the organs.
- Respiratory problems.
- Behavioral Problems
If your bird is very sick or if their health problem is serious, they may have to stay in the hospital to be treated. This can include changing their diet, treating an infection, or other therapies to get your parrot better.
When the parrot has eaten something that is causing it to vomit, the vet might have to give it medication to help it pass the object.
If your bird is having behavioral problems and is causing itself to throw up, the vet can advise you to do things such as remove toys or mirrors from the cage, to spend more time with the bird, to give it fluid therapy so that dehydration doesn’t happen and to possibly changing the diet.
Can Your Parrot Cause Respiratory Problems in Humans?

The only real way that a parrot will cause respiratory problems in humans is if the bird transmits the infectious disease called Psittacosis.
This disease can cause lung problems and inflammatory illnesses.
Can You Get Sick from a Parrot Bite?

Once again, the only way that you can get sick from a parrot bite is if the parrot has Psittacosis, or what is also known as Parrot Fever.
If you get bit by a bird that is infected with this disease or if you breathe in the waste dust particles from this bird, you can be infected.
You can also catch this if an infected bird “kisses you” and touches its beak to your mouth, spreading the germ to you.
Are Parrot Bites Harmful?

Getting bit by a parrot can be harmful since the beak of the parrot is so sharp and because of the chance of a disease, but the worse part is that it is no fun, and it probably means that the parrot is unhappy.
If you feel that your parrot is acting out because it is unhappy, talk to other parrot owners or the vet to see what you can do to help your parrot adjust to your home.
How Do You Know if Your Parrot is Cold?

You can tell if your parrot is cold when it fluffs up its feathers or if it puts its beak into its chest. A bird that is cold will sometimes squat so that the feathers can cover its legs.
If your bird is shivering, chances are your bird is cold and needs to either be put somewhere that there is not a draft or needs to be put in a warmer part of the home.
A bird that is too cold can lose its appetite and refuse to eat, causing it to lose its energy.
Can You Tell if Your Parrot is Dying?

If you feel that your parrot is not feeling well or is sick, you should take it to the vet right away. Even though you may not be able to tell if your parrot is dying, here are some signs that your parrot might be sick and needs to go to the vet right away:
- Loss of Appetite
- No energy
- Squinting
- Walking on only certain parts of the body.
- Seeming angry or irritable.
- Runny Nose
- Excessive Sneezing
- Puffed Up Feathers for a Long Period of Time.
- Coughing
When your bird is feeling well and is happy, it will clean itself. If you notice that your bird is not doing its regular behavior such as cleaning itself, chances are your parrot is sick and needs to go to the doctor.
Do Parrots Carry Rabies?

Parrots, like other animals such as fish and snakes, are not mammals, and so, therefore, they cannot get rabies or spread rabies to their owner.
Can You Tell if Your Parrot is Sad?

There are some signs that you can use to tell if your pet parrot is sad. Here are a few of the signs:
- Head bobbing.
- Changes in the voice.
- Being overly aggressive.
- Not having an appetite.
- Having fluffed up feathers.
- Change in the color or consistency of the droppings.
- Plucking their feathers excessively.
- Being irritable or angry acting.
Birds are animals that can become depressed and have a mental illness. If your bird seems to be less chipper than you are used to, there could be something that is bothering it and causing it to be stressed out. Try to do things such as change the position of the cage, spend more time with your pet parrot, give it a new favorite toy, and help it to not be boring.
Here are a few reasons that your bird can become depressed:
- If it lost its favorite toy.
- The death of a bird partner.
